  1. Creating Sign Languages

We had unwittingly prohibited Lynn from learning her native language. Lynn had quickly copied our natural gestures at only one year of age. She had even invented her own signs and then used them to communicate, to tell us what she wanted, what she needed, even to tease and play. “All gone,” “come,” “up,” “hot,” “no.” She had smiled brightly, her eyes gleaming when she used these signs; she seemed to say, “I’m alive, I’m normal, only my language is different. But look how easily I can learn it and how I enjoy using it!” But we hadn’t heard. Instead we started courses and went to clinics and listened to professionals; by our actions we had said, “You are not to communicate effortlessly like all those deaf people who have escaped from the control of hearing parents and teachers. You must give up your childhood. You must sacrifice your early education. You must experience terrible frustrations. You must live incommunicado for five or ten or maybe fifteen years. You must become normal!"

Questions:Is Lynn blind? What makes you think
    so?

  3. In my opinion, Singapore is not becoming a Western Wannabe. There are still a lot of Singaporeans who are not obsessed with Western cultures. In many food courts and hawker centers, Singaporeans still sell food such as " Nasi Lomak", Chicken Rice and many others that are not related to Western cultures.

I learnt from Elim Chew never to give up and to strive for my dreams. I also learnt from her to plan for my dreams as early as possible so that I can start heading towards them. To be a Forbes Hero, you must be dedicated and be ready to persevere the challenges that come to you. You must be motivated by whatever you do.

I think tuition is important to me, although I do not like it. ( As there is homework...) Going to tuition helps me be prepared for the problem sums that we are going to do in school. I think tuition is the key to having better grades as we can revise the worksheets that our tuition centers give us before the exam and anytime we want.

    The Five Words :
    1. Philanthropy – The practice of donating money to help people in need.
    2. Innate – inborn, natural.
    3. Parliamentary – Having to do with the parliament.
    4. Bias – 1. An opinion or tendency to be strongly for or against a person or thing.
    - 2. A slanting direction across the grain of a fabric.
    5. Puerile – Childish

  4. I think Singapore is becoming a Western Wannabe. There are many shops which sells western food.

I learnt from Elim Chew that we must help people as much as we can. The two qualities are to never give up and will not be afraid of difficulties.

Having tuition is important to me. They help a lot in our studies.I think that tuition is the key to good grades. Tuition centres gives us many papers and it will enable us to revise for our exams.

2.innate-an innate ability or quality is something you are born with

    3. obsessed-to think about something or someone much more than is necessary or sensible.

4.gesticulated-to make movement with your arms and hands while speaking as you cannot think of the right words to use.

5.mince- do not say exactly what you think, as it might offend people.

  5. 1)I do not think that Singapore is becoming a Western Wannabe. People from around the world come to Singapore because of its variety of food, not just Western food. There are many Singaporeans enjoying food that may not be relating to Western cultures.
2)I learnt from Elim Chew to follow my heart and dreams and to not give up. To be a Forbes Hero, one must be ready for all challenges and able to face them, one must also never give up and keep trying if one fails.
3)Having tuition is important to me, although I hate it. They help a lot in our studies. I think that tuition is the key to getting better grades, not good. Although tuition gives extra work and testpapers, it is all for a good cause. One also must be willing to learn in order for tuition to help.

2)I learnt from Elim not to give up and to believe in yourself.

  7. 1)Don't be a Western Wannabe
I do not think that Singaporeans are becoming a Western wannabe because even though they look like a Western from the appearance but in the heart, they are still a Singaporean.

    2)Elim named Forbes Hero
I learnt to plan my goals when I am young so that I can strive to achieve my goals.\

3)I think that tuitions are important to me .I think that tuitions is not really the key to good grades as students can still be revising on their own at home.It is not really necessary.

  8. 1)Western wannabes?
I think Singapore is more into westerners as most people I see are from the Western countries. Western food stalls and clothing are commonly found in Singapore, and most people like their food.

    2)Elim named Forbes Hero
I learnt that not just well educated people are successful in life. We need to focus on our ambition to achieve the best regardless of the type of career and not to be easily bullied by people if they say negative things to be a forbes hero.

3)Tuition culture here not as bad as elsewhere
Having tuition is not important to me because if the tuitor does not bother to teach you anything, then the money spent would be useless.Tuitions help improve grades depending on the tuitors, if they are willing to teach you properly or not.I think it might not help as most students dislike tuitions and may not bother listening to their tuitors.

    Words I learnt-

1)Impassioned-showing great warmth or intensity of feeling
    2)Viable-especially
    3)Puerille-childish and silly
    4)Obsessed-to engage in something
5)Diminishing-to make less or cause to appear less

  9. (1)In my point of view,no doubt Singapore is becoming a Western Wannabe, there is nothing wrong.
We are still Uniquely Singapore as the language we speak is like 'rojak'(mix of dialects and Mandarin)and of course our well known language is 'Singlish'.Many of us drink McCoffee, but that does not mean we do not enjoy our local delights, like'chee cheong fan','chili crab' and 'bar chor mee'.
(2)I learnt that no matter who you are, there will be difficulties in life. All we must do is to persevere and every problem can be solved. We also must think for ourselves, to be positive and try your best in everything you do.
(3)Tuition is important to me as it helps you to improve your grades.Paying a large sum of money for a good tutor does not mean that it would help.Tutors must motivate the students to learn more.It also depends on the individual, whether he is interested in learning. If he/she does not, tuition will not help and it would waste your money too.
    5 new words I learnt:
(1)gesticulate:use expressive movements of hands and arms when speaking.
    (2)impassion:deeply moved
    (3)innate:having borned with ability
    (4)diminish:lessen
    (5)commercial:business,trade,profit
