  1. 1) Dr Tan is a very friendly, caring and thinks for others before himself. He cared for the poor poeple and wanted to make their lifes better. He even sacrificed him having the luxury of being in singapore- a better and cleaner place. He used 13 years of his life to helf cure people whom needs medical treatment and teaches people who are low educated, giving them a better environment to live in.

    2) I will be willing to but with a dilemma. Of course I will not be that willing to give up all my luxury of maybe living in an air conditioned room and getting to surf the net often but on the other hand, I also wish to help the children and people there by giving them medical treatment, happiness and a better place to live in. And maybe it will not be fair to my entire family as they might not think in my perspective so its a very hard choice.

    3) I learnt that just lending a hand and helping people can really change the world. By giving them education and medical treatments, they might lead a better life, and I will be able to spread the happiness and joy to them. So I really think that Dr. Tan is a very good role model.

  2. 1)Dr Tan is caring and he thinks about the poor state of people in Yunnan. He went there to care for the people as he wanted to make their lives better. He spent many years of his life in Yunnan to cure people who need medical treatment and he also teaches people who are not that educated, thus giving them a better environment to live in. I feel that his perseverance is great as he left the luxury of being in Singapore which is a modern place to going to Yunnan which does not have much technology.

    2) My answer would be yes and no. It will take me a long thought to separate me from all the luxury of Singapore. But by going to Yunnan, I can help the people there by giving them proper medical treatment and, thus giving them a better place to live in. The no of my answer is to bring my entire family there. If my family disagrees to my proposition of bringing them there, it would only be fair if I go there myself (but I would have to be an adult!).

    3) Dr. Tan is a very persistent to help people in the world. I learnt that just lending a hand to people can really change the world. Just by giving them (people in Yunnan) education and medical treatments, they might live a better life. Thus, I think that Dr. Tan is a very good role model.

  3. 1) Mr Tan is helpful and caring, someone who puts others in front of himself. He would rather care about the people in Yunnan to help the country's people by first using his knowledge to teach their doctors the right ways to heal a certain illness, instead of being a doctor in Singapore and having an easier life in an air-conditioned clinic.

    2) I would have to ponder about this for a long time before willing to go, but as Mr Tan's family actually agreed to go there with him, I also do not think that my entire family will agree to it.

    3) I learnt that by helping others with a simple thing can change others lives, let alone such a great thing that Mr Tan had done by sacrificing the comfort that he can actually have to go to a poor country like Yunnan to give others a hand and let them have a better life. I think compared to action heroes like "Superman" or "Batman", he's the real superhero.

  4. 1) Dr Tan is a kind-hearted, helpful and caring person who likes to help people in need. I respect him very much after watching the video and I think he does deserves to be one of the Asians of the Year. To help other people, he sacrificed his luxurious life in modernised Singapore and chose to go to a rural place in Yunan to help people using his skill as a doctor.

    2) I will not go with my whole family but go alone as I do not want my family to suffer with me instead of living in modernised Singapore with air-conditioned shopping centres. I would want to go as I have a skill which can benefit other people who have nobody with the skill I had.

    3) I learnt that if we can help people, we should do it as it benefits other people despite the need to live in a rural place.

  5. 1) I would describe Dr Tan as a thoughtful and compassionate one-in-a-million man. In order to help the villagers in Yunnan, he willingly gave up his family in a comfortable city to go to a village which is not comparable to Singapore. Despite the fact that the place is not very hygenic, Dr Tan did not complain. He used his ability as a doctor to cure any disease the villagers had. Unlike us, he conquered the obstacles he faced and still continue to help others.

    2) I will not uproot my whole family to Yunnan. Instead, I would bring my family for a visit as I know that they would not be able to get used to the environment in Yunnan so easily. When I get to Yunnan, I will immediately help the villagers find a cure for their diseases. By helping others, it will benefit both the villagers and myself. I will also teach the villagers how to make sure they do not fall ill so easily.

    3) I learnt that we, as fortunate people, should willingly help the needy like Dr Tan. He did not give up despite the fact that there were many operations and other things to be done to help the villagers. We should be thankful for what we have and try to help others who are not as fortunate as us.

  7. 1.He is a caring, loving, helpful and sacrificial person. He left his luxuries and comfort here and head for Yunnan, just to help the less fortunates in Yunnan and share his skills with the villagers. This shows that he is willing to do anything to help others.

2.I will have a hard time choosing whether to go or not, because if I go, my family and I will have to suffer a lot as there might not be any luxuries like television and computer,or worse still, contracting a disease in Yunnan. On the cotrary, by doing this, it can save people from illnesses and diseases.

3.We should learn to treasure what we have for others are worse off than us.We should also learn to sacrifice ourselves and help others.

  8. 1)He is a helpful ,friendly ,active ,intelligent ,stays calm whenever he faces problems and thinks of others before himself. Although he has gone there only as a doctor and teacher, he took the initiative to get some volunteers from Singapore to help, learn in Yunnan. He kept a positive mindset and attitude which kept him going on to help "mould" people heart, share skills, impart knowledge. In my own opinion, he is like an "Inspiring Learner". He inspires others too, like him, sacrifice all that he has to come help these less fortunate people.

2)I might not uproot my family to Yunnan. However, I would love to go and help out but I will have to first get approval from my parents. Sacrificing all that I have in Singapore might be a little difficult and what's more the environment there is not clean. I feel that we will be able to adapt to the environment there as long as we have the mindset to help those in need. Accommodation is not the main focus but helping is the most important in my opinion. Not only will we help, we will learn skills, values and know how are others' lifestyles. I bet that will be a great experience!

    3) We should learn how to sacrifice and help others who are less fortunate then us and that lending a hand to give others hope, confidence as well as happiness!

  10. 1) I would describe Dr Tan as an honourable and benevolent man whom I greatly respect. I am sure that he had difficulties adapting to Yunnan when he first migrated there, but hey, look at the video again - he looks so contented and really, really happy. I do not think he was just pasting a fake smile on his face just for the camera either...

    2) Okay, this might sound selfish but...no; I would not be willing to uproot my family to go to Yunnan to live. I feel that when we help others, we should help within our means. For instance, if I desperately wanted to donate 10 million dollars to a certain charity, that would not be within my means and quite impossible as I am not a millionaire. So, I do not think that I will be comfortable moving to Yunnan and leave my life of comfort. Also, not only must we do charitable things within our means, we have to do these things WILLINGLY and with an open mindset. If we think that going there is suffering or making sacrifices, then maybe we should think twice. We also cannot go there unwillingly and be all sulky and grumpy about their sparse amenities, or else we might as well stay at home.

    3) I have learnt that we should be persevering, just like Dr Tan. He mentioned about feeling frustrated when people took a whole lot of trouble going to the faraway hospital, then not being able to get through the operation. At least when that happened, he did not give up and announce, "Ok, listen. I am fed up and extremely frustrated with all of you. I give up! I'm going back to Singapore. Bye, people..." That would be insanely mad! How would the people who heard that feel? So I feel that he was very patient to have persevered through all that and I will try to be more patient as well. Lastly, I would like to end off with this quote from Greg Mortenson, the author of, Three Cups of Tea: “I had more to learn from the people I work with than I could ever hope to teach them.” I think this aptly describes Dr Tan.
